Following a genuine passion for utilising surrounding food, and advocating self sustained living
On an island called Traustholtshólmi not that far away, in the middle of Þjórsá river, solitary soul Hákon Kjalar Hjördísarson lives his days surrounded by wide skies and fields of grass. Dividing his time between his beloved island, where he resides from April to September, and the warmer shores of the Caribbean, Hákón’s life consists of simple pleasures: fresh food, wild nature and the placid sound of the river. With no children or neighbors to worry about, Hákon takes care of occasional visitors and tourists with great care and passion. There’s only one thing he dreams of, he jokingly says: of living his life with his black dog on an independent Traustholtshólmi, in a magical silence and perfect happiness (From Reykjavík Grapevine)
“Everywhere you look, Hakon’s resourcefulness and tender care for the environment is evident.”
For Hákon, reusing these old gardens and preserving their heritage is a pleasure and an honor in itself, but their actual functionality also makes them ideal for securing his livelihood on the island. Still, what he loves most about them is knowing that he has his fingers in the soil that tens of generations have harvested from before him. He gets to use their gardens, their soil, their land. It’s a feeling of companionship. Like we’re all in it together.
